A touch of 1960s magic: another genie bottle for our Airbnb

If you’ve ever browsed an op shop, you know the thrill of finding that one item that just speaks to you. Well, that’s exactly what happened when we stumbled upon a stunning genie bottle during one of our treasure hunts. It was love at first sight.

Now, this isn't just any bottle. It’s a 1960s-style genie bottle, the kind you’d expect to see in an episode of I Dream of Jeannie—with its amber diamond cut glass, and just a hint of magical allure. Immediately, I could picture it fitting perfectly in Calypso, which is already packed with retro-inspired pieces that give off all the nostalgic feels. So, of course, we had to add it to our space.

Why a genie bottle?

If you remember I Dream of Jeannie, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. Jeannie (played by the iconic Barbara Eden) lived in a genie bottle—a cool, otherworldly vessel that was part magic, part style icon. We wanted to capture a bit of that whimsical, retro magic in our Airbnb to help guests step back in time to the '60s, even if just for a weekend.

Adding the genie bottle was an easy decision. It’s bold, it’s fun, and it’s a subtle nod to a time when everything was a little more colorful, a little more playful, and, frankly, a lot more glamorous.

Two bottles, twice the magic

The amber genie bottle we just found is going to be the perfect companion to the aqua genie bottle that’s already been living in the house. It’s like the two bottles are meant to be together! The amber bottle brings a warm, earthy vibe that will contrast beautifully with the cool, calming tones of the aqua one. These are the colors of beach holidays. Together, they will add layers of retro charm to our space and bring the whole 1960s aesthetic full circle.

The retro vibe

If you’re booking a stay at Calypso, get ready to step into a time capsule of mid-century modern furniture, vintage decor, and little details that’ll make you feel like you are in another era. We’ve carefully curated each piece to bring back that magical 1960s vibe.

But it’s not just about the aesthetics. There's something about vintage finds like this genie bottle that evokes a simpler time, when a bottle like this was a whimsical part of the everyday decor.

Guests & genie magic

While we can’t promise you’ll find a real genie inside (we’ve tried rubbing it, no luck yet), we do think the bottles add a bit of magic to the space. So, if you’re into all things vintage and you’re looking for a beach holiday with a nostalgic twist, come visit us at Calypso in St Helens Tasmania. Who knows? Maybe your genie wish will come true…
